Car and Driver Comparo: 2013 BMW X3 xDrive28i vs. 2013 Audi Q5 2.0T, 2013 Range Rover Evoque

Monday 25 February 2013

One of our favorite BMW SAVs is the entry-level in the U.S. family of X3 vehicles, the xDrive28i.

In 2011, BMW announced that will replace the inline-six in the 28i model with the new N20 2.0 liter turbocharged unit that delivers similar power with less fuel consumption. The 2013 xDrive28i returns 28 mpg highway/21 city and an EPA combined rating of 24 mpg compared with 19/26/21 from the xDrive35i.

In its class of midsize premium Sports Activity Vehicles, BMW X3 28i competes against similar offerings from Audi, Q5 2.0T and even with the new Range Rover Evoque.

2013 BMW X3 xDrive28i vs. 2013 Audi Q5 2.0T, 2013 Range Rover Evoque

U.S. magazine Car and Driver took the time to compare these three vehicle. The X3, loaded with five option packages costing more than $1000 each, came in at $52,345; the Evoque was at the high end of the scale with a $56,795, while the Audi Q5 had the lowest list price in the test at $45,120.

But which one takes the win?

Let’s have a look at an excerpt from their review:

The thing is, that???s really the only thing that drives us nuts about the X3 with the 2.0T. Like the comparo-winning 328i with which it shares its ???TwinPower Turbo??? engine, the X3 wins here because of its broad portfolio of talents. It is neither as staid as the Audi nor as juvenile as the Range Rover. Do not take this to mean that the second-generation X3 is a middle-ground Milquetoast. It doesn???t slalom as quickly as the Evoque, but it is ultimately the most rewarding to drive. We witnessed this on our evaluation loop, where the BMW???s suspension, steering, and throttle responded in the most predictable and progressive fashion.

The X3 delivers a controlled and comfortable ride that gives it the feel of a well-tuned premium sedan. It feels, in short, like a 328i. It???s just as quiet inside as the Q5, and the noises that do penetrate the cabin are more pleasant, including a nicely judged engine/exhaust trill.

The BMW???s engine is the best of the bunch, too. It produces as much horsepower as the Evoque and more peak torque (delivered at a lower engine speed) than the ??others. The X3 is the quickest to 60 mph at 6.2 seconds and is the only one of these three that can break 15.0 seconds through the quarter-mile. This is true even though, at 4194 pounds, it???s a bit heavier than the Audi and the Rover. Over 300 miles, the BMW also managed 23 mpg, 1 mpg better than the Evoque and 1 less than the Audi.

BMW to launch F10 518d model

Friday 08 February 2013

With the 5 Series facelift coming this summer, BMW plans to introduce a new model in its European fleet. The BMW 518d will be available for European customers and is powered by the N47T engine producing 105??kW (143??bhp) @ 4000 rpm and 300??N m (221??lb ft) @ 1750-3000??rpm.

The 143??bhp model was or is currently used in the E81, E87 and E88 118d, E90 and E91 318d, E84 X1 sDrive18d and xDrive18d, MINI Countryman Cooper SD (from 2010) and X3 xDrive18d.

Nearly four years later after its introduction, the 5 Series is due for BMW???s usual life cycle impulse, or as everyone calls it, a facelift. Subtle touches will be applied to the front and rear lights, as well as the front and rear aprons. The side mirrors will get turn signal indicators while chrome design elements are being added to the front fenders.

Inside, the changes are minimal as well. Even the multi-functional instrument display as debuted by the 7 Series facelift was available starting with July 2012 production.

The U.S. market will get the following models: 528i, 528xi, 535d, 535d xDrive, 535i, 535i xDrive, 550i and 535i hybrid.

BMW 5 Series remains the superior segment leader in 2012

Wednesday 16 January 2013

The BMW 5 Series has supremely defended its market leadership in the segment of business automobiles. 359,016 customers worldwide opted for a BMW 5 Series model in 2012. Whether an elegant Sedan, a dynamic Touring or a luxurious Gran Turismo, the BMW 5 Series thrills customers all over the world with its distinctive combination of design, technology, dynamic performance and comfort.

Drive . The modern 4, 6 and 8-cylinder engines provide an impressively high level of output, running smoothness and efficiency.

For example, the BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition makes do with an unsurpassed fuel consumption of just 4.5 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres. Even the extremely powerful BMW 535d with 230 kW/313 bhp and a maximum torque of 630 Newton metres is more economical than the competition, with an average fuel consumption of only 5.4 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres.

The top-of-the-range engine in the BMW M550d xDrive for the Sedan and Touring models is unique in the segment. The impressive performance figures for the in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine developed exclusively for the BMW M Performance automobiles with three turbochargers are as follows: 280 kW/381??bhp, maximum torque 740??Nm, maximum engine speed 5,400??rpm, average fuel consumption 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres.

The 4-cylinder petrol engines are fitted with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology, likewise providing a high level of output at a low fuel consumption. The two 2-litre turbo engines in the BMW 520i and 528i feature a turbocharging system based on the twin-scroll principle, variable valve control VALVETRONIC and variable camshaft control double VANOS – as such they are based on the technology package of the multiple award-winning inline 6-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo in the BMW 535i.

Driving dynamics and comfort. The BMW 5 Series offers the perfect compromise between sporty flair and suspension comfort. Over and above the excellent standard suspension, numerous technologies are optionally available to further enhance Sheer Driving Pleasure.

For example, the integral active steering uses steered rear wheels and variable steering ratio on the front axle to subjectively shorten the wheelbase when driving slowly, thereby improving manoeuvrability and agility. When driving fast, the wheelbase is subjectively lengthened in the interests of driving stability and comfort.

AdaptiveDrive combines individually adjustable shock absorbers with active stabilisers at both axles so to achieve both a more comfortable and a more sporty ride.

The Driving Experience Control switch enables the character of the vehicle to be altered significantly at the press of a button – from very sporty through to highly efficient.

The intelligent all-wheel drive system xDrive is available for a total of 17 BMW 5 Series variants.

ConnectedDrive. The interconnection between driver, vehicle and the outside world is becoming increasingly important. The BMW 5 Series offers numerous innovations in this essential and fast-developing area.

Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) provides traffic information in real time, suggesting appropriate alternative routes in the event of a traffic jam.

BMW Night Vision uses a thermal image camera to detect people and animals from a distance of up to 300 metres, warning the driver of potential collisions.

The full-colour Head-Up Display projects relevant information into the driver’s field of vision such as current speed, speed limits, navigation directions and warnings.

The new multifunctional instrument display shows instruments relevant to the current driving mode. For example, in ECO PRO mode the driver is given important tips for an economical driving style. Meanwhile in Sport mode the colour and graphics change, focusing on data relevant to a sporty driving style.

My BMW Remote App gives the drive access to numerous vehicle functions via smartphone, including locking the car or activating the headlamp flasher – so as to be able to find the vehicle more easily in large car parks, for example.

The BMW Connected App provides a range of functions inside the car such as web radio, Facebook, Twitter, RSS feeds, Wiki Local and personal calendar.

Bluetooth Office transforms the BMW 5 Series into a mobile office. The main smartphone office functions such as e-mail, appointments, contacts and notes are transferred directly into the vehicle and displayed on the screen.

BMW 5 Series Touring wrapped in Cherry Red foil

Sunday 06 January 2013

In 2010 BMW introduced the sixth-generation 5 Series Touring or Sports Wagon as known on this side of the pond. Unfortunately for those of us living in North America, the beautiful and classy 5 Series Touring was replaced by the 5 Gran Turismo and there is little hope that we will see a new full size touring here until the next generation hits the market.

With its classy yet aggressive lines, the 5 Series Touring has quickly become a great seller for BMW in Europe and when equipped with the M-Sport Package, the sportiness of the bigger 5 Series stands out even more.

In standard form the 5er Touring is offered with a wide range of exterior colors, both metallic and non-metallic. Occasionally a matte BMW Individual paint can be seen. But for those that are looking to spend less than 5,000 dollars or euros for the special color treatment an alternative can be found in the art of wrapping the car in a special foil.

German wrappers Schwaben Folia are giving the F11 5 Series an interesting color choice: Cherry Red with a matte finish. The foil was applied to the entire car, including door sills and door handles. The overall look is enhanced by the roof and its black brushed steel foil.

It remains unknown what the price for this “paint job” is, but we’re ready to bet that it’s lower than the $5K advertised by BMW for special colors.

AutoExpress: BMW X1 vs Audi Q3

Monday 19 November 2012

UK magazine AutoExpress compares the BMW X1 SAV against a similar offering: Audi Q3. Since its market launch in fall 2009, the BMW X1 has notched up worldwide sales of more than 300,000 units.

The two variants tested are the 141 horsepower xDrive18d in xLine trim. The Audi responds with a 138 horsepower 2.0-liter TDI quattro version S line.

Which one should you buy? Let’s see the verdict from AutoExpress:

“BMW has been on a roll of late. The 1, 3 and 5 Series are our current favourites in their respective sectors, while the new 3 Series Touring recently took victory in its first test. Unfortunately, minor updates to the X1 haven???t done enough to change our opinion that it???s the weakest car in the range.

Its dated cabin, awkward looks and heavy steering all disappoint. The X1???s flaws are even more obvious when pitched against the Audi Q3, which is a well rounded and desirable package.

It isn???t exciting and it???s far from revolutionary, but a first-rate cabin and smart looks mean it feels just like a scaled-down Audi Q5, while the driving experience strikes a careful balance between comfort and handling. It also has a bigger boot and more passenger space than the BMW.

Still, the X1 isn???t all bad. The 18d engine is refined, punchy and clean, while taut body control and secure grip mean that, aside from the heavy steering at low speeds, the BMW is pretty good to drive.

Also, the new xLine trim is relatively well equipped and it???s cheaper to buy than the S line Q3. The pair returned identical fuel consumption, but the BMW is cleaner. Yet the Audi has better residuals, and is also easier to live with, roomier and more desirable than the X1. It???s a clear winner.”

Track Test: 2013 BMW X3 xDrive28i vs. 2012 BMW X3 xDrive35

Wednesday 07 November 2012

There is no secret that many of us here at BMWBLOG love the new BMW X3. Ever since its introduction, we have been huge advocates of BMW’s midsize premium SAV and we tested all the initial models, the inline-six 28i, as well as the high-end turbocharged 300 horsepower model.

The revamped xDrive28i went on sale this year and it’s on our test drive list.

Analysis: How the 2.0L Turbo Four May Compare To the 3.0L NA Six

As it often happens, the choice between two engines comes at the purchase times, and one question we often hear from our readers is: which one gives me the best value for my money without sacrificing performance? Is the $5,000 more xDrive35i a better buy?

InsideLine takes the two vehicles to a race track and compares them from a handling and performance perspective.

BMW 5 Series gets a frozen wrap

Thursday 18 October 2012

Frozen paints are becoming increasingly popular and lots of BMW series now offer at least a model that sports the cool looking, yet sensitive, matte color. At the same time, the wrapping process of a paint job is also quite popular these days with most of these “exotic” colors coming out of Easter Europe, more specifically Russia.

Just earlier this year we came across another bling-bling wrap from a Russian tunner that decided to give their X5 a gold plated look. Today, we have something different. An owner of a F10 BMW 5 Series decided to use vinyl to enhance the look of its car. But not just any vinyl, in this case a matte transparent film that can achieve the frozen look at a fraction of the paint cost, with the similar results.

The result. Well you be the judge of it…

BMW Super Bild Of The Week: F11 5 Series Touring

Tuesday 02 October 2012

There is no denying the appeal of a BMW touring. You combine the space and usefulness of an SUV with the driving characteristic of the Ultimate Driving Machine. And when dressed up in the aggressive M Sport trim or beyond, like in this Kelleners Sport Tune, they are simply some of the nicest looking cars on the road.

Alas, BMW has denied those of us in the United States the pleasure of the touring, including the awesome M Performance Automobile M550d with its tri-turbo 3.0 liter diesel churning out a ground pounding 546 ft-lbs of torque while still attaining 44 mpg rating.

As a matter of fact, currently the United States is not privileged with any touring, in any series, until the F31 Touring makes its U.S. debut next year. That???s all fine and dandy but what I really want is the F11. It???s okay if we don???t get the M Performance Automobile edition since the certification process, and more importantly the costs involved to have a new engine certified for U.S. DOT approval are quite high. Therefore I will gladly settle for a 535i M-Sport.

So for those in power, if you???re reading this, those of us that are touring fans here would greatly appreciate the LCI F11 next year.

BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride and the BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition

Monday 01 October 2012

The 2013 BMW X1 Sports Activity Vehicle is now available in US showrooms. Two very special vehicles will soon arrive to reflect the X1???s special capability to take full advantage of winter fun. The BMW X1 Power Ride Edition will be available at BMW Centers, especially tailored for those who make the most of winter on the slopes.

The BMW Concept K2 Power Ride is a reflection of the adrenaline rush of full-speed downhill fun. This unique concept will make its debut at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November just as the BMW X1 Power Ride Edition becomes available.

BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride: Providing limitless fun on and off the slopes

Youthful, sporting design and lifestyle-oriented functionality shape the face of the BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride. The concept car is the result of a three-year cooperation between BMW and winter sport equipment supplier K2. It embodies both the agile and surefooted driving characteristics of the BMW X1 ??? even, thanks to BMW xDrive, under challenging conditions ??? and the intense thrill of winter sport. The BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride blends bespoke exterior features with an exclusive roof structure and refined additions to interior details. Valencia Orange metallic paintwork is complemented by a distinctive graphic whose design takes its cues from a limited-edition K2 ski. A central element of this crossover graphic is the stylized image of a fox, which forges ahead of a dynamically penned X from the rear of the car to the front doors.

The exterior design of the BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride backs up this energy-laden graphic with a sprinkling of other distinctive characteristics which accentuate the sporting instincts of the compact BMW X model to impressive effect. An extra eight millimeters of suspension travel over the standard model and 19-inch light-alloy wheels in Ferric Grey with polished spokes exude a feeling of power and presence. The Ferric Grey trim of the front and rear sills and side skirts emphasise the car???s uncontained forward momentum over snow and loose ground. Dark tinted side windows with matt Black surrounds and the roof rails ??? likewise painted matt Black ??? form an appealing contrast to the rich colours of the body surfaces.

Roof boasts innovative ski rack and powerful Harman Kardon hi-fi sound to fuel the apres-ski party.
The unique roof structure specially developed for the concept car is made from milled aluminum. Its broad functionality is reflected in an asymmetric structure: two luggage boxes and a ski carrier are positioned alongside one another. The ski carrier, which can be found on the front passenger side of the car, has an innovative retaining mechanism, while the skis are held at an angle to make their distinctive surface design particularly visible. Designed exclusively for the BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride, the skis also feature the fox graphic, as well as a color scheme inspired by wood, brushed aluminum and carbon surfaces. Its White and Valencia Orange running surfaces display the brand logos of BMW and K2 on either side of a broadly spread X.

A sound system from Harman Kardon is installed in the two luggage boxes on the driver???s side. High-end hi-fi systems from the specialist brand also provide an extremely dynamic audio experience in standard series-produced BMW models. The two-way loudspeakers installed in the BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride generate output of 320 watts and turn the cars into a powerful sound stage for apr??s ski fun with a difference at the end of the valley run. A Class D amplifier with 2 x 550-watt output, a 500-watt subwoofer and a high-quality microphone from AKG are also on hand for those spontaneous parties in the snow. And the transparent sounds can be complemented by visual effects, for good measure. The luggage boxes can be illuminated in Blue and Orange, as desired, and three LED spotlights are integrated into the front edge of the roof structure.

The sporting characteristics and exclusive style of the BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride are also underlined by bespoke interior design. Black Nappa leather with orange-colored contrast stitching for the seats and door trim and interior trim strips in exquisite Fineline Bay wood trim conjure up an ambience imbued with quality and individual sophistication. In keeping with the theme, and as a mirror image of the exterior???s contrasting effects, the black floor mats have reflective piping and orange-colored accents.

Exclusive equipment, limited edition: BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition.
The creative meeting of minds between BMW and K2 has inspired both the concept car revealed in Los Angeles and a limited-run special-edition variant of the new BMW X1. The BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition, due to arrive in November 2012, boasts exclusive design and equipment features along with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. It will be available this winter only.

The BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition makes an excellent advert for the cooperation BMW has fostered not only with ski manufacturer K2 but also with a number of illustrious front-line winter sport resorts. The special-edition variant of the compact BMW X model is therefore also a fine choice of vehicle for trips to the world???s most attractive ski and snowboarding destinations. The special-edition model features the xLine, roof rails in Aluminum satinated trim and a storage package, including a front armrest. The perfect range of winter accessories comes as standard for the first time, with the special-edition model featuring the 460 roof box (incl. BMW base support system), a ski and snowboard bag sporting a design specifically created for this model, all-weather floor mats and a fitted luggage compartment mat. And there???s another highlight lined up: anyone who purchases this special-edition model will receive a high-quality, exclusively designed pair of K2 LTD Powder Ride skis, available only in conjunction with the X1 Powder Ride Edition.

The BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition comes with the full selection of BMW xLine design and equipment features. BMW xLine includes exterior elements in matt Glacier Silver, special 18″ light-alloy wheels and door sill strips, a sports leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons, fabric/leather upholstery for the seats, trim strips in dark copper, and ambient lighting.
The BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition can be ordered in the non-metallic paint shades Black and Alpine White, as well as in Valencia Orange, Mineral White, Mineral Grey, Glacier Silver and Black Sapphire metallic finishes. Also contributing to the unmistakable look is a special decal on the doors and wheel arches of the compact BMW X model. The X-shaped graphic borrows the BMW K2 Powder Ride Concept???s motif, which symbolizes the smart and agile character of the BMW X1.

The exclusive design of the BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition and the skis that are included ensure winter sport fans stand out from the crowd on both the road and the slope. This individual look expresses the thrill of the drive (or ride), sporting enthusiasm, lifestyle and sense for premium quality in equal depth. The market launch of the BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition is scheduled for November 2012 and the special-edition model will be available in the US in both BMW X1 xDrive28i and X1 xDrive35i guises.

BMW Group DesignworksUSA sets a distinctive tone when it comes to making a mark on the road and on the slopes.

The orange, white and black illustration can also be found on the side surfaces of the roof box and on the exclusively designed skis. The graphic was specially designed by BMW Group DesignworksUSA for the concept car, BMW X1 special-edition model and K2 LTD BMW Powder Ride Ski range of winter sports equipment. With dynamic lines and colour blending, richly contrasting accents and the X form displayed on both car and skis, this design creates an effective visual connection between the hallmark properties of the BMW X1 and K2 skis. This association is also conveyed by the K2 LTD BMW Powder Ride Ski, whose surface design combines the fox motif with X-shaped lines and the BMW and K2 brand logos. A tyre track graphic on the ski???s running surfaces is another reminder of the link-up with the BMW X1. BMW Group DesignworksUSA is a subsidiary of the BMW Group and a globally active design studio focusing on transportation and product design as well as strategic design consultancy. The company???s headquarter is in California, but it also has locations in Europe and Asia.
